Success Through
BIG Grants


Here are some of the creative ways that teachers have accessed the BIG Grant program over the past two years. The grant amounts ranged from $125 - $1300. You will note that all of the successful grants are tied directly to existing curriculum units or support teaching and learning methods that enhance the learning experience of the students at Center Grove.  

Flyleaf Helps Readers Fly. Supplemental reading materials were purchased for the CG Reading Program. This multi-sensory program has brought depth and a broader reading experience to the children in the Rising Readers program.

See What’s Happening with Flip Video. A 3rd Grade teacher is using a portable video camcorder in a variety of ways in the classroom, including recording the Readers Theater performances, videoing field trips so that students who missed the field trip can experience what they missed. These recorders also can be used in conjunction with the Smart Board.

Responsive Classroom Training. The PTA supported a grant for a 2nd grade teacher to continue her training in the Responsive Classroom. After receiving the training, the teacher has shared her knowledge with the CG staff. Responsive Classroom techniques continue to enhance the students’ social, interpersonal and academic skills.

Artist of the Month Learning Center. This grant allowed the art teacher to expand the Artist of the Month collection at Center Grove. Each month, she can now introduce the students at Center Grove to a new artist’s work and style and teach about his/her place in history and the history of art.

What’s New in Children’s Literature Conference. This conference highlights the best new books of the past year enabling the librarian enhance the offerings in the media center.

The Key to Success is Organization. A 1st Grade teacher was granted funds to purchase chair pockets that are useful in teaching organizational skills to her students. She has found that better organization among her students has enhanced the quality of instruction time.

Songs for Learning. Through this grant, a Kindergarten teacher has purchased a CD set that teaches basic concepts and helps to build skills across the Kindergarten curriculum, including math, language arts, phonics, science and social studies. In addition, it helps to enhance the students’ fine and gross motor skills.

Outdoor Living Habitat. Through this grant, supplies were purchased to strengthen the outdoor learning classroom created by a 2nd grade class.

IPod Audio Listening Center. IPods are now used by students in a 3rd grade classroom each week as they work through their centers to enhance their experience with the Trophies Reading Program

Weather Unit Vamp Up! The 4th Grade teachers utilized BIG grant funds to enhance the weather unit that is part of the NJ core content standards and the 4th grade curriculum.

Practice, Review, Assess and Go. A 5th Grade teacher purchased Eggspert, a practice and review tool that allows children to review concepts in any subject area in a fun-filled environment. Through this grant, the teacher also purchased Privacy Shields to reduce distractions at test-taking time.

Love of Literature. The 3rd Grade teachers purchased literature sets to supplement the Language Arts program.

Implementing Guided Reading. The 1st Grade teachers purchased additional materials for use in the guided reaching program.

Supporting Reading. Through this grant, the 2nd Grade teachers purchased supporting reading materials for their Science and Social Studies curriculum.

Calendar Rug. A Kindergarten teacher purchased a calendar rug to enhance the daily routine of calendar work. The calendar rug supports the use of differentiated learning techniques in the classroom.
