Pediculosis - Lice

Message from Mrs. Sharon Lopez, RN - CG School Nurse

Lice infestations are quite common among elementary-aged populations.  Once an infestation occurs, it can be quite tenacious and difficult to eliminate.  Identification and prevention are the best way to eradicate lice from a community.  As we continue to work together to eliminate the incidence of lice at Center Grove School, the following points are useful for parents to keep in mind:

* INSPECT your student’s hair DAILY, whether you suspect lice are present or not!  THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PREVENTION METHOD AVAILABLE TO US!

* Take note if your child appears to be scratching his head – an itchy scalp can be indicative of a lice infestation.

* Encourage your student to wear long hair pulled back or contained in some manner.  Avoid commingling of hair with others.

* Discourage your student from playing or touching other people’s hair.

* Discourage your student from sharing brushes, combs, or hair accessories with others.

* Avoid sharing hats or helmets when attending sporting events.

* When at after-school activities, please ensure that you hold your student’s outerwear, or separate it from the outerwear of others.  Do not place coats in large piles together.

Advice from Parents Dealing with Lice Infestation

**** The information contained below was provided by parents who have been treating their families for lice infestation in their homes.  This information is not from the Randolph School District and it has not been endorsed or reviewed by medical or health professionals.  Please continue to direct any questions to your family doctor or Mrs. Lopez, RN, Center Grove School.*****

Parent Comments:

*
Many parents whose children have been affected here at Center Grove have found that the combing out method is unsuccessful on their children's hair and have found a higher success rate with picking out nits with their fingernails.
*
While OTC products recommend a second treatment in 7-10 days, cases here at Center Grove have found nits hatching closer to a 4-5 day cycle.
*
The most important thing we need to highlight is that even if your child is not currently affected, we need daily checking by ALL parents whose children have close contact with infested children (friends, classmates, relatives), and checking about 2-3 times a week by the rest of the parent population (those with children far removed from anyone infested with lice).
*
If your child is infested, it is necessary to check their heads twice daily to pick out any additional nits that may remain or appear after the initial treatment.
*
I am currently using an organic product that I found on the web.  It has a four part defense system with citronella oil in the product.
